What is LOLER Inspection and why would you need it?

Just like your car requires MOT - a regular check to ensure that all the parts are working and your car is safe to use and operate, a LOLER Inspection is required to operate lifts like goods lift, mobility aided lifts, passenger lifts, and more. LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations and is a legal requirement for any equipment lifting or lowering a load and that lifting and lowering operations are carried out in a safe manner.

Callows Tree Surgery Loler inspector has over 30 years experience in the tree works industry as a tree climber and is still an active climber.

How often are Loler tests required?

Any items used for tree climbing that are used by a tree climber should be tested every 6 months or if the item of equipment has been possibly over loaded or contaminated or altered or damaged in anyway then the item should be retested.

Items of equipment used for rigging should be tested every 12 months and as climbing equipment should be retested if overloaded or damaged in anyway.

What is the purpose of testing the equipment for the Loler regulations?

The purpose is to check that items of equipment used for lifting and lowering items including a person ( a climber) are in good condition and are safe to use and are operating to the manufacturers guide lines and safety parameters.

The item of equipment has a record of testing from its manufacture date and can be traced back to the manufacturer if a item should fail while in use.

As with any item of equipment that are used frequently, wear and tear occurs over a period of time which can result in some items failing a Loler test or may just need some minor maintenance.

What will the LOLER inspection certificate mention?

Once the LOLER inspection is completed, you will receive a written and signed report identifying the following…
~The make and serial number of the equipment being examined
~Location and date of the last examination and when the next inspection will be due
~The weight limit of the lift
~Reason for the inspection
~Details of the tests carried out during the inspection
~Any possible defects that could be dangerous
~Details of the defects that require repair, renewal, or alteration and by which date it should be undertaken
